Ham Pot Pie

Thyme for Cooking Posted on January 22, 2016 by KateOctober 23, 2017
Ham Pot Pie

We’ve all (or at least most of us) had our share of frozen pot pies – usually chicken. This is different. For one thing it used up the rest of our holiday ham. For the other I used purchased puff pastry and only for a top crust. Puff pastry is light, flaky and easy…. All things we love. Make it in 2 single serving dishes as I did, or 1 larger dish. … Continue reading →

Zimsterne; silence

Thyme for Cooking Posted on December 9, 2015 by KateOctober 7, 2017
Zimsterne

I had thought that Zimsterne were a Swiss cookie…. At least, that’s what my mother told me. She had a Swiss grandmother. But borders were a bit blurred back then, around and before WWI. When I looked up the origin of the cookie I discovered it could be Swiss or German or Alsatian – which would make it either German or French depending on the year. Whatever, they’re delicious. And light. … Continue reading →

Ginger Chocolate Chip Cookies; lake update

Thyme for Cooking Posted on December 7, 2015 by KateOctober 7, 2017
Ginger Chocolate Chunk Cookies

Think of these as Ginger Snaps (old-fashioned cookie) meet Chocolate Chips and fall in love. I can’t get chocolate chips, of course, but you get the idea. When one can’t buy chocolate chips one makes chocolate chunks. One of the first kitchen utensils I bought at mon mari’s favorite DIY store was a chocolate hammer. I have since bought other tools – for grating, shaving, etc. but the hammer was … Continue reading →

Butterscotch Ice-Box Cookies

Thyme for Cooking Posted on December 4, 2015 by KateOctober 7, 2017
Butterscotch Ice-Box Cookies

I would call these Caramel Refrigerator Cookies, but it’s my mother’s recipe and she called them Butterscotch Ice-Box Cookies, so there you have it. Whatever they’re called they are really easy and have a great caramel (butterscotch) flavor. The best part is they can be left in the fridge for a few days, then sliced and baked when you have a few spare minutes. You can bake all of them … Continue reading →

Peanut Butter, Oatmeal, Chocolate Chunk Cookies

Thyme for Cooking Posted on December 2, 2015 by KateOctober 16, 2019
Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies

I’ve decided to re-post my favorite Christmas cookies. The original posts are so old that they’re not really ‘searchable’ on Google, Bing, etc. (wrong format – don’t ask). Besides, they’re so good and so easy they’re all worth sharing again, right? And these could really be considered healthy – peanut butter, oats…. Breakfast of champions – at least for me. I really love sweets for breakfast. I blame it all on … Continue reading →

Baked Ham with Mustard Sauce; how much is too much?

Thyme for Cooking Posted on December 19, 2014 by KateDecember 19, 2014

Baking / roasting times for hams (and turkeys) are all over the charts…. And I’m not doing a chart. For a ham the number of minutes per pound depends on whether it’s boneless or bone-in, fully cooked or not cooked and the weight of the ham. A larger ham takes fewer minutes per pound than a smaller ham. Of course the oven temperature makes a difference as well. Some like … Continue reading →
