I’m cautiously optimistic about the potager.
I seemed to have kept the rabbits out so far, so my lettuce sets are full size ad we are enjoying early salads.
A few of the onions have bolted, due to the cold, damp spring…. but only a few and the weather seems to be warming.
The slugs have been nibbling on the … Continue reading.....
Every year I wake up on this day and vow to spend the day doing only fun things.
Maybe I’ll sit in the shade and read.
Maybe I’ll spend the day with my pencils and pastels and watercolors.
Maybe I’ll watch old movies.
And this year, maybe I’ll spend the day lounging around the pool.
Every year it’s the same…. … Continue reading.....
One more green salad for summer.
The lettuce isn’t looking quite as fresh in the markets these days and I think it’s time to switch to pasta salads.
And rice and quinoa and barley and couscous….
So many choices; so little summer.
I called the vinaigrette I used for this salad ‘French’ Dressing as it’s meant to be like the … Continue reading.....
Someone who shall remain nameless (but is not me) neglected to check behind the shutters before closing them against the afternoon sun.

Besides, photos of salad dressings are bland at best.
And I wanted to do this before salad season … Continue reading.....
Yes, I’m buying lettuce.
I pulled out the chewed off stumps of romaine that had been trying to grow in my potager and added them to the compost.
Fortunately, lettuce is really cheap this time of year. I can get 3 huge heads for $2.
At least I think that is cheap…. I’ve bought it so rarely I really am … Continue reading.....
Today, I’m doing two things that I hate.
One thing that I mildly dislike is re-posting recipes.
But it’s salad season and this is so quick and easy. I just hate the thought of someone, wanting a nice, fresh salad on a hot summer day, reaching for a bottle of unpronounceable ingredients.
Or, worse, having a bag of chips … Continue reading.....
We’ve had a bumper crop of lettuce this year.
First we had the red and green curly heads that I planted from sets.
That was followed by the red and green ‘mesclun’ mix that I planted from seed.
We’re finishing with the red and green romaine that is slowest to grow and handles the warmer temperatures better than the other … Continue reading.....
