Grilled Potato, Onion & Cheese Packets; birthday presents

Thyme for Cooking Posted on August 21, 2019 by KateOctober 22, 2019
Potato Cheese Packets

This is a summer version of Potatoes Savoyard, cooked on the barbecue, wrapped in foil.  We’re been making this every summer for as long as we’ve been together. Whenever I ask mon mari if he has a special request this is it. Fortunately, it’s easy. I use a sweet onion if I have one, or a red onion or a regular brown onion. They all tend to get sweet as … Continue reading →

Bacon, Leek, Cheese Phyllo Tarts; cherry tomato sauce

Bacon, Leek, Cheese Phyllo Tarts

I planted my tomato seeds last week. I have 16 little pots of red, white, yellow, green and orange tomatoes. I wasn’t able to find all of my favorites at the garden stores last year, thus the seeds. Of the 16 plants: 3 are Roma meant for cooking and freezing, and 2 are cherry tomatoes. I have a bit of a love / hate relationship with cherry tomatoes. Well, actually, … Continue reading →

Giant Burger Stuffed with Mushrooms; Lunch

Thyme for Cooking Posted on July 22, 2018 by KateJuly 22, 2018

Did someone say Burgers? It’s summer…. It’s time for burgers…. In winter we love meatloaf; in summer we love giant stuffed burgers. You could make smaller burgers, but we like the big one. Cut it into wedges and let the cheese ooze out of the center. You can fill them with anything you like – this one is filled with mushrooms, olives and Gruyère cheese. A grill basket makes it … Continue reading →

Potatoes Savoyard; the new math

Thyme for Cooking Posted on March 4, 2016 by KateNovember 29, 2017

Two potato recipes in one week? Get over it….. There are more pressing issues to concern yourselves with. This is another recipe that I have been making so long the origin is lost. I prefer it to the traditional gratin potatoes.  With out the milk and heavy cream it’s much lighter in calories, but the Gruyère keeps it cheesy and the onions add another layer of flavor. If I’m in … Continue reading →

Smoked Pasta, lunch in the vineyard

Thyme for Cooking Posted on July 27, 2014 by KateAugust 2, 2014

Smoked pasta? You’ve never had smoked pasta? It is, without a doubt, the best dish of summer. We’ve been making it for years and it’s better each time. I make it for guests…. They are always skeptical at first, then amazed at how fantastic it is. Then we come to blows over the last of it. It’s worth buying a smoker just so you can make it. It’s that good … Continue reading →

Cauliflower, Cheese and Egg Casserole; The Bunny Slayer

Thyme for Cooking Posted on February 27, 2013 by KateAugust 10, 2013

I am such a bad blogger. I have a habit of reading other food blogs (that’s a good thing), finding recipes I like (also a good thing), forgetting where I saw the recipe (that’s a bad thing) and deciding to make it anyway as best I can from memory. A good blogger would remember the original poster / creator of the recipe and give proper credit. I’m a bad blogger. … Continue reading →

Easy Chard Gratin; meeting more of the family

Thyme for Cooking Posted on October 1, 2012 by KateSeptember 4, 2019

I originally made this gratin with spinach – frozen spinach, actually.  I always keep a bag of frozen spinach in the freezer and this is a perfect quick vegetable dish when the fridge is empty. Then I branched out… and discovered it works with any vegetable.  Or, at least it works with all the ones I’ve tried. Especially other dark leafy greens. Easy Chard Gratin  Ingredients: 8oz (250gr) chard, leaves … Continue reading →
