Cooking for Two

Thyme for Cooking Posted on April 24, 2011 by KatieJune 9, 2013

I did a post a few years ago on 'cooking for one'. I had seen a cook book entitled 'Cooking for One or Two'.  At the time I wrote: "Cooking for one is exactly as different from cooking for two as it is from cooking for 4 or cooking for 12." One cannot make something that feeds 'one or two'.  It's either the right amount for one person or it's … Continue reading →

Turkey Broccoli Stir Fry; Happy Earth Day

Thyme for Cooking Posted on April 22, 2011 by KatieOctober 21, 2017

Happy Earth Day! The theme for this year is 'A Billion Acts of Green'. I checked out the Earth Day site looking for an idea for a topic. I thought about carrying reusable shopping bags, which I've been doing for years. I thought about walking more and driving less; keeping the house at 66F (I wish it would get so warm) rather than 68F or 70F; and all the other … Continue reading →

Spinach, Strawberry and Almond Salad; Cooking for Two, Weekly Menu

Thyme for Cooking Posted on April 16, 2010 by KatieAugust 12, 2013

Cooking for two can be a challenge. Much of what we buy comes pre-packaged, and the packages are big. And that's if you shop at normal stores…. If you shop at Costco the packages are huge. (I visited one, once.) Meat can be divided and frozen: a 32oz package of ground beef becomes 3 or 4 meals. It's a bit more challenging with vegetables.  The cauliflower looks wonderful and there's … Continue reading →

Warm Stuffed Endive Salad; no purple potatoes for me!

Thyme for Cooking Posted on March 21, 2010 by KatieAugust 12, 2013

I've never seen a purple potato. Limes, along with pineapple, sweet potatoes, ginger and mangoes are in the 'exotic' section of my supermarket – if anywhere. I have searched in vain to find such outlandish items as frozen fruit – like berries, or, heaven forbid, frozen orange juice. Every spring there are boxes of dirt sitting on the floor in the produce section, though, used to transport from the coast, … Continue reading →

Cheese Flan with Spinach Salad; Menu of the Week, the Cooktop

Thyme for Cooking Posted on March 19, 2010 by KatieAugust 12, 2013

The Saga of the Cooktop continues… My cooktop has 5 burners…. All of which are supposed to work…. There is 1 small burner, 1 larger burner and 3 medium burners. Shortly after installing it the small burner quit working.  We took it in to be repaired – being out of their service zone, which they failed to tell me when I bought it, we had to take it to the … Continue reading →

Stir-Fried Beef and Broccoli; No More Shopping!

Thyme for Cooking Posted on November 17, 2008 by KatieOctober 7, 2017

Stir-Fried Beef and Broccoli I'm sick of shopping. I'm tired of spending money. It's exhausting. So many decisions; so many stores. I'd really like to go somewhere without hauling a trailer behind the car to hold my purchases. Have you ever tried to park a car and trailer in a busy shopping center parking lot? One has to find 2 open places together. Usually that's in the far back corner, across the street and in … Continue reading →

Creamy Polenta with Sage; And yet another Surprise!

Thyme for Cooking Posted on October 29, 2008 by KatieOctober 14, 2017

Creamy Polenta with Sage I’m not quite sure how to say this…. But our chimneys don’t go all the way to the top. We’ve gone from four fireplaces to one in the blink of an eye…. So to speak. Why didn’t we think to check that the chimneys went all the way to the top? I mean, really, how silly of us! We were driving down a small lane the … Continue reading →
