Beef, Cabbage, Feta and Pimiento on Barley

Thyme for Cooking Posted on March 23, 2015 by KateMarch 23, 2015

I may have said this before, but….. When one is cooking for two, buying a cabbage requires planning. I get two or three or four dishes out of one head. I usually use it once for a first course, once or twice as a vegetable side dish and the rest gets put into stir-fries, skillet dinners or quiches. Fortunately, we both like cabbage. Beef, Cabbage, Feta and Pimiento on Barley … Continue reading →

Stir-Fried Ground Beef and Mushrooms

Thyme for Cooking Posted on March 23, 2014 by KateMarch 23, 2014

This was originally posted years ago. For some reason, known only to the gods of computer glitches, some of the photos didn’t transfer when I switched blog hosts last year. Rather than going back and redoing the old posts – and leaving them as old posts, I decided to update and re-post occasionally. Like when I’ve had a really rough day. Poor, poor, pitiful me. Besides, this is really good … Continue reading →

Italian Beef & Cabbage

Thyme for Cooking Posted on February 23, 2014 by KateFebruary 18, 2021

We’ve been eating this every winter for years. I don’t remember where the original idea for the recipe came from, probably a ‘Ground Beef Cookbook’. In the U.S. I used the traditional ‘white’ cabbage; here I use the ‘green’ or Savoy cabbage. Either work equally well. Use any type of rice you like, but I use brown Basmati. It cooks in just 15 minutes. A little bit of prep and … Continue reading →

Giant Stuffed Grilled Burger; Finished!

Thyme for Cooking Posted on May 19, 2013 by KateAugust 10, 2013

The weather is crap – too cold, wet, windy, whatever to do any work outside. Our visitors are gone. That means I’ve had 3 days of uninterrupted computer time. Although it wasn’t nearly as much fun as having friends to play tourist with, I did accomplish rather a lot. Which is good, because I have 3 weeks of French homework to catch up on tomorrow before I head back to … Continue reading →

Red Wine Risotto with Beef and Mushrooms

Thyme for Cooking Posted on April 7, 2013 by KateAugust 10, 2013

Bear with me as I patiently wait for spring and inspiration for warm weather cooking. In the fall, when the weather is grey and cold, I love lighting the fire. I look forward to all the slow-cooked, braised meats, long-simmering soups and tender, hearty stews. Planning on what to cook next is exciting. In April, when the weather is still grey and cold, I’m sick of lighting the fire, I … Continue reading →

Noodles with Beef and Savoy Cabbage; No mail on Saturday?!?

Thyme for Cooking Posted on February 10, 2013 by KateOctober 23, 2017

My mother did not make ‘pasta’. She made Creamettes or noodles. She didn’t make ‘skillet dinners’ or ‘stir-fries’ or even ‘casseroles’. She made hot dishes. She would have loved this. Think of it as comfort food without all the calories. Noodles with Beef and Savoy Cabbage Total time: 30 minutes  Ingredients: 12oz (360gr) ground beef (mince)  1 medium onion, chopped 1 rib celery, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 3 cups … Continue reading →

Pasta with Beef and Mushroom Sauce; the update

Thyme for Cooking Posted on December 18, 2012 by KateAugust 12, 2013

Pasta sauce doesn't have to be tomato based. Even pasta sauce with ground beef doesn't have to be tomato based. This doesn't have a hint of tomato in it and is definitely on our list of favorites! Pasta with Beef and Mushroom Sauce Total time: 25 minutes  Ingredients: 4oz (120gr) fettuccine 10oz (300gr) ground beef 6oz (180gr) cremini mushrooms, chopped 1 large onion, chopped 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 tsp … Continue reading →
