Sautéed Snow Peas (Mangetout) with Green Garlic

Thyme for Cooking Posted on April 8, 2012 by KateAugust 11, 2013

When I lived in the US I used to plant snow peas, or edible pea pods. Much as I love them, I haven’t bothered planting them here for two reasons: I limit my potager space and they would interfere with the sweet corn. I can buy mangetout; I can’t buy sweet corn. Americans call the edible pods by a variety of names: snow peas, pea pods, sugar snap peas. The … Continue reading →

Spring Risotto, with Asparagus, Green Garlic and Snow Peas

Thyme for Cooking Posted on April 1, 2012 by KateOctober 10, 2017

One of the problems for someone who has blogged as long as I have is that, sometimes, we don’t want new recipes. Sometimes we just want to make the old recipes that are near and dear to our heart. Sometimes the old recipes don’t need to be improved or changed. This is especially true for me in the spring when the green garlic and asparagus come into season. I know … Continue reading →

Stir-Fried Chicken with Snow Peas (Mangetout); the learning curve

Thyme for Cooking Posted on March 22, 2012 by KateOctober 8, 2017

Continuing education. In some fields it's required to maintain a license in order to work. In some fields it's required to stay on top of changes; to be on the cutting edge. And I suppose one could say that it's necessary to keep our brains stimulated. But wouldn't it be nice if there were just a few things that we could learn and then be done with? That, from that … Continue reading →

Pasta with Cherry Tomatoes and Pea Pods; Travel as education

Thyme for Cooking Posted on May 11, 2011 by KateAugust 11, 2013

We're on our way to Italy for a family reunion…. I've posted some old stories and new recipes to entertain you while we're off having fun. Years ago, before we lived here, we were in London, window-shopping with another couple.  The wife spotted a figurine she wanted to add to her collection.  They discussed it a bit, as it was rather expensive, then decided to buy it. She asked if … Continue reading →

Sesame Brown Rice with Mangetout (Snow Peas); bunny report

Thyme for Cooking Posted on May 6, 2011 by KateDecember 8, 2013

Once again I'm being plagued by baby bunnies. We have a chain link fence surrounding our front garden / lawn.  Last year I added a 15" (37cm) high wood fence all around the bottom and dug in chicken wire in the bad spots, where they regularly tried to dig under. That didn't bunny-proof the area, but it did seriously curtail their activity.  Instead of seeing a dozen rabbits nibbling on … Continue reading →

Spring Stir-Fry with Beef; the update

Thyme for Cooking Posted on May 4, 2010 by KateOctober 12, 2017

I played hooky yesterday. It was cold, but the sun was shining, and when mon mari said he was off to buy plumbing supplies I decided to go along for the ride. Not that I’m terribly interested in plumbing supplies, but I figured we’d be passing a garden store or two that we could stop at, and reading in the car is the only way I catch up on my … Continue reading →

Lamb with Asparagus and Snow Peas on Large Couscous; we have walls! sort of

Thyme for Cooking Posted on April 26, 2010 by KateMay 2, 2018

We had a momentous occasion chez nous last week. We took the plastic off the the hole in the floor above the staircase. For the winter, since there is no insulation under the roof, we had plastic, insulation and boards covering up the top of the staircase. Last week we uncovered it. We can now walk up and down the staircase just like normal people. Mon mari got so excited … Continue reading →
